I’m Just Not That Into You

janninaThere’s my poor Death Knight. She used to be human, well, she used to be REALLY human then she became a Death Knight. Now she’s a Worgen, talk about a hard life. I do not know why we can’t bond. I’m just not that into her, I don’t know why. I HATE, HATE, HATE, melee DPS but my absolute favorite character is Catwynn a Druid kitty so I endure it for her sake. My favorite is ranged DPS but I can’t get a Mage past level 60 even if you did literally pay me.

I find it interesting that the characters I like, don’t seem to be based on how much I like the play-style. What in the hell is going on here? In an effort to try to salvage my relationship with my Death Knight I race changed her to Worgen. What? Yes, that’s really why I did it, why? No, I did NOT just do it to get the Gilnean Raven that was just a wonderful bonus. I’m really trying to like her and thought this might help.

Time will tell if this works, she has been my miner for ages. I don’t even have the vaguest idea how to DK, a couple of expansions ago I made a spamable macro for a rotation that was acceptable back then and I’ve never changed it because she doesn’t seem to die overmuch. She runs around in clothes that are an expansion old. I really feel guilty about this kind of abuse but just not enough to do anything until now.

I’m really interested in this, is it the voice? I do know I can’t level a female Blood Elf because of the voice. She was always yelling at me about something, I couldn’t take it. How do these characters take on a personality while I’m not looking. I’m not consciously making one for them, but they have them. Is it just me?

I have a million Warlocks but three I actually level. Cimmeria, an Alliance Warlock who I enjoy playing but she has no personality that I’ve been able to detect. I’m still hoping. Ironsally, my Ironman competitor who has LOTS of personality. Cimmeria and Ironsally are also identical twins but not the least similar otherwise. Weird. Sasche’s my Frosaken Warlock who has a personality that could only be described as taciturn, but it does exist.

In order of their birth a few of my characters:

Zorakar

The first, a Night Elf Hunter … yeah … it’s kind of a rule isn’t it. She was happy to step down as the main. She found communicating exhausting and really is happier communing with her pets and skirting the fringes of populated areas, picking flowers as she goes.

Lokkan

A fiery Draenei Shaman who is definitely pissed off about something. She took over for Zor in BC. She’s the most likely to be rude to you, she seems to be seething with something. Anger? Disappointment? Because she was set aside when she stopped carrying a big two-handed weapon? Yeah, I don’t think she ever got over that, poor girl, she wants to be the main.

Sophina

Human Mage level 53 bank alt. She’s a little embarrassed at her failed attempt at surviving out in the world, but secretly she’s thankful that now all she has to do is stand at the AH dressed in a lovely tux. The world is not a safe place for a Mage played by me.

Jannina

Newly Worgen Death Knight, will this help develop a personality? I’m hopeful I’ll find out who Jannina really is but it’s early days.

Cimmeria

Human Warlock, I really think the lack of personality I detect may indeed BE part of her personality. She IS a Warlock, she knows this bothers me, I think she’s hiding it purposefully just to get under my skin … typical.

stockades

Sheesh, it’s early … enough with the deep thoughts on my characters.

I feel kind of bad. I think those guys in The Stockade thought we were there to help them with the rowdy prisoners. Because of the CRZ no more than 3 time zones thingy Navi and I had to resort to hiding in there to compare skins on our pets. WHAT! Well come on, you knew I had to go there at some point. Pet skins are very important. We compared our Tundra Penguins and found that mine has evil little red eyes and hers has lovely blue ones. We could only conclude that mine came a little too close to Arthas at some point, poor penguin. Dangerous place that Northrend.

So now, what to do. Snakes come in various colors, should I collect one of each? Bunnies? Rats? Decisions, decisions … where’s my Safari Hat?

  1. Aha! NOW I know who Navi was whispering when she mistakenly told me that rats come in 3 colours!

    • LOL! Yes, we were checking all the possible permutations of our pets. A Snake seems to come in a variety of colors, they are going to have to lift the upper pet limit if they keep this up!

I’m still laughing though imagining being told that rats come in 3 colors out of the blue!

  2. Okay–we need to talk about Lokkan. I know you’ve mentioned the fact that she, as enhancement, must dual-wield, but Tome, I gotta tell you, there is something incredibly satisfying about it. Give it a shot. Grab a couple of maces, axes, etc. and put your weapon embues on–windfury for your main hand, and flametongue for your off. Go hack away at some target dummies and just watch- pure poetry in motion. That two-hand stuff is for Death Knights. The thing about weapons for enhancement shamans is that they need some heft–none of these flighty daggers for us! Maybe this is why Mataoka loves Dwarfs–they can be shamans, too, and love a chunky weapon that builds momentum. In every other aspect, the gear, etc. are similar to hunters. Oh–and those Spirit Wolves. Worth the price of admission right there.

Every so often, and I have no idea why, (sometimes it’s when I change specs, sometimes not) the weapon embues switch on their own, and the only reason why I’ll notice is my dps/damage drops significantly. I have to drag each weapon to my bags, put one back at a time, re-embue, take it out, put the other one in its slot, repeat, and then equip both. Pain in the tail, but small price to pay for battle-ready weapons.

Great. First day of my break and I miss her already. But I’ll keep telling myself, “how can I miss them if they don’t go away?” haha!

And now I need to find an Arthas penguin….

    • It should be some comfort to her though, as she was the second to level to 90. She’s not doing much as even clearing a virmen from her garden takes her five minutes.

I just checked, problem could be her 426 iLevel gear and I see she’s still sporting a quest trinket from Mount Hyjal. I don’t think she enjoys this semi-ironman gear, lol.

  3. I know how you feel… I’ve tried the shaman over and over again and there’s just something… missing. If I can’t get a personal connection with my character, it just won’t work.

    • I know and the Death Knight has been out their gathering everyone’s mats and as crazy as it sounds I feel a responsibility to at least attempt to make a connection.

I’m not sure why I thought making her a Worgen *cough* Gilnean Raven would do it but it’s worth a try. I think if I connected with her I’d even make an attempt to actually learn how to DK!

  4. My theory is that characters develop personalities sneakily when the servers are down and then ambush you when you log back.

It’s definitely got the be the right combination of class, race and looks though for me. If I don’t feel “bonded” by level 15 ish, I’ll delete them and try again.

  5. I’ve been watching a lot of house programs to try and inspire me for our house hunt and someone said something like “if you don’t fall in love in eleven seconds, it’s not for you”, I wonder if the same can be said for characters.

Also I thought I’d already commented but either wordpress ate it or I’m losing the plot (probably the latter!).

    • You are free at last! I think WordPress is losing its marbles, why it’s suddenly putting legitimate comments in spam I don’t know. I’ve got to start paying more attention and not leave it in charge!

Oh, I remember when my husband and I were house hunting there was one house we walked in the front door, looked at each other and both said, “Thanks, we’ve seen enough.” I know the agent thought we were crazy but someone must have been murdered in there or something, creepiest feeling and we both felt it.

And that’s it! They are developing and plotting during server maintenance!

  6. Cimmeria? As in Conan?

    • No, I thought I was being clever, lol. I meant it to be Cimmerian = very dark or gloomy but didn’t notice I forgot the “n.” I’m now asked in game if I’m a big Robert E. Howard fan on occasion and have to admit, no, I just watched the movie.

  7. Oh, poor unloved little death knight. If my lady still had a heart it would be breaking. Maybe it’d help you connect to your lady to think about what she used to be before her soul was ripped from her and she was turned into a death knight and given an unending thrist to kill stuff. Another thing is to think about what her purpose in life is now. In Wrath it would have been to destroy Arthas but now what does she hope to accomplish? Is she mindlessly joining in the fight to slake her thirst for destruction or is she seeking atonement? How has this affectedher faith?

Also I love to talk death knight! And if your looking for an easy spec Frost is pretty easy to play. I know unholy sounds like it’s got all the cool toys but I’ve also heard it’s ackward to play. Blood’s also pretty good if you just want to go out and kill stuff by the bucket-load while living forever.

    • I know! You’d think with a back story like Death Knights have it would be easy to bond. Great ideas, I will have her ponder on what she wants to accomplish, maybe that will give me a clue to her.

I was thinking of changing her spec, she’s Unholy, so to speak lol, since I haven’t a clue what I’m doing. I just liked those Gargoyles! Maybe a second spec is what she needs. Maybe she’ll come into her own as a Worgen Frost Death Knight!

  8. Oh dear rep busted me. She did think I was a little bit nonsensical!
I must get my post up showcasing our penguins. You with your horde-eyed penguin and me with my alliance-eyed one. I will spare everyone my different coloured snakes though.

  9. Our toons seem to have a lot in common, Tome!

My huntard, she ‘skirts’, picks flowers, plays with her pets. My lock is fiesty and aggressive but plays the girly-girl–she’s probably a Gemini. My DK is a slaveboy who hangs out in Stormwind, doing the spy thing for me. (The Lich King made him very easy to manipulate. Bet I could get him to wear a dress.)

I have so many toons I never play because, I don’t know, we just didn’t click I guess. And the ones I love dearest are not necessarily my favorites to play. Anou was my main until last expansion, and in MoP she’s my favorite to play but my pally is now my main. /headache.

Oh. And I want a safari hat. lol Had no idea there even was one.

    • OH! You must have a Safari Hat! Even if you don’t pet battle it’s a great addition to your wardrobe, lol.

Yes, it is funny that the characters we enjoy playing are not necessarily our favorites. I’m glad it’s not just me!
