My Wildstar … um … Day

wildstarfirstlookDue to an attack on me from real life my Wildstar Weekend turned into more of a Wildstar day. We had a rocky beginning but I figured trying to get in five minutes after the beta weekend started was the problem. I waited a bit and connection woes settled down and I could get on with getting off the ship and down to Nexus.

nightriverOh wait … I should introduce you first. Okay … aside from the hair, that is pretty much NOT a representation of the rl me. In my defense I was in a hurry to get into the game and when I picked “body type” I was zoomed into her face … no really. The next character I made, I made sure to zoom out. If I hadn’t been in such a hurry I could have spent hours in there, lots of customization available for your character.

chuameYeah see? Next character I got pretty much spot on … that’s me, the short one. Although I’d decided I would play an Exile I thought I should give the Dominion a shot at winning me over. They didn’t. I abandoned him before I even got off their ship. Their choice of music was driving me insane while I looked for stuff I couldn’t find, so I bailed.

openquestIn my previous post Sprowt commented that she encountered some trouble with finding where to reread quest objectives, FIND quest objectives and other issues. I had the same problems until I found a little teeny, tiny button that opened your quest log. I later found a big button in the lower left corner that gave access to pretty much everything. So now I knew what I was supposed to do … sort of.

I had a hell of a time getting off that damn ship. I couldn’t figure out where to go, what to do. I think I’ve been spoiled by pointy arrows and really sparkly quest objectives and tabbing out to look up quests on Wowhead. I made a second Exile later in the day and zipped right through the relic room. This time it wasn’t crowded with people so that may have been the problem.

wsprettyFINALLY! Planetfall! And it’s really beautiful. Questing woes settled down once I hit Nexus. I still fumbled about until I learned to use the map but things were going much more smoothly. I think part of my problem might have been playing a game for so long where I know all the quests. I had to backtrack repeatedly because I did not FULLY read the quest text. My fault.

I didn’t get into my path, Scientist much. Too busy killing all the things. Wildstar has an interesting combat system that I really liked. I have a button that implies I can double-tap to dodge but have yet to manage to make it work. I might actually have to resort to research on this but I wanted to try the game with pretty much no knowledge and see how it went … see if Wildstar can be derp approved. I have to like a game first, then I do research.

The world so far is beautiful, high on my list of must haves. I liked the combat system and had no trouble getting used to it. Important, as I don’t like spending all my time dead. I did die for science once. I wanted to see how annoying it was. I got the option to pay to rez where I died or rez at the nearest holo-crypt. Minimally annoying although that might change at higher levels.

While I did not get as much time as I would have liked, I did get enough time to know that yes, I would buy Wildstar. I had fun.

  1. A white kitty girl… why am I not surprised? 😉

Love your grumpy chua with the awesome Tuskarr ‘stache!

It really sounds like folks are having fun with this game. If I manage to run out of things to do in WoW (or just suddenly become excessively bored of what I am doing) before Warlords, I’m rather tempted to try Wildstar for a bit.

  2. Darn .. I didn’t get chance to play this weekend, and I have to confess that my last attempt put me off a little bit – but I’m sooo jealous you got so far .. so if I get into another weekend I’m going to make an effort to get onto a planet!

I do think some (a lot?) of my problems were my own making – as you mentioned, simply being used to playing one game for years you make assumptions that you really shouldn’t. For example, when I got stuck on a quest, I just tried to “google” it .. haha .. surprise! No-one (that I could find) have made a “Wowhead” for Wildstar 😛

I did find, as well, that the quest information didn’t stay up on the screen very long .. but perhaps that was just me being twitchy and accidentally closing it.

Thanks for the mention, btw 😉

    • Getting off either of those ships was the hardest thing! In the relic room or museum. I did find it easier once the room wasn’t filled with people.

I know! I was stumped once and all games do this not just Wildstar. The place on the map I was supposed to go marked the location of the objective not the entrance to the tunnel to reach it. I was so lucky to find someone had already made a video showing the entrance. If I hadn’t I’d still be running around seaching, lol.

Me being my rather silly self, I completely forgot to take any screenshots when I knew that I’d be writing something about WIldstar. I’ll find a way.

But yeah, I completely agree with you that the ship part is rather annoying – there’s just too much to focus on when you’re new to the game. As well as that, I was just so anxious to get down to Nexus, I’d seen so many beautiful screenshots!

As for paths, explorer is definitely for me. The Wildstar world was meant to be explored, the environment is tailored around climbing and finding secret tucked – away areas. Hell, I even wandered into a cave to find shrinking mushrooms and some kind of tiny Aurin having a cup of tea with some vegetables due to exploring.

I probably just had too many of those mushrooms.

    • I took Scientist but I think now after playing a bit I would rather be an Explorer because you’re right, it’s a world to be explored rather than running around scanning random objects.

Look forward to reading your post in your time there!

  4. So, you’ve no problems with adding another sub? That’s the one thing keeping me from being that interested in Wildstar.

    • I haven’t bought it yet because I’m waiting to see if ANY time on a computer is going to be a big no-no but I just have the one WoW account now so just two subs going I could justify as long as I can actually play.

  5. I’m glad you had fun in Wildstar too. I spent as much of the weekend as I could manage in it and I loved it. I’m glad I took the explorer path because I spent most of my time randomly wandering around and climbing all the things anyhow! As such I did spend some time dead, mostly from falling off of really big things I was climbing.
I wasn’t super impressed with the Dominion either. If I buy the game I’d probably have one anyhow just for fun, but I definitely liked the Exiles better. I liked the questing system once I figured out how it was showing me around. Before that I just wandered around trial and erroring until I figured it out.
I love your kitty girl! She’s adorable. And the world is just gorgeous. I hadn’t thought I’d end up liking the art style so much but I ended up absolutely loving it. Then again I felt the same way about WoW until I played it.

    • I really did enjoy it, I was disappointed I couldn’t have spent more time there because I was having a great time running around and seeing new areas.

Yeah, I definitely think I would like Explorer path more because I was generally doing what they do anyway.

I wanted to like the Dominion but just couldn’t seem to, I have no trouble in WoW being bi-faction as I don’t perceive either side as being evil or right or wrong, just different views but the Dominion I really didn’t like. Not sure why. Maybe it was that music on their ship, lol.

      • Yeah WoW is definitely not a story about black and white. There are a lot of grey areas and the differences between factions really come down to red and blue instead of black and white and I love that. It means I can love my characters of both sides and feel like they’d all feel they’re doing the right thing. That would be a -lot- harder Dominion side in Wildstar. They do some stuff on the ship that really comes across as fairly evil.

  6. oooo that game looks awesome! nice costumization and i love that white haired girl.. is she a cat human? or something lol Anyway, glad to see someone is playing a different game besides WoW… its awesome! =)

  7. It’s a cat!!! I saw that and thought – omg how did I know – and then I saw Kam’s comment too 😀 Planetfall looks nice too – thanks for those pretty pics!
